Down Syndrome

Down Syndrome (DS) is the most common chromosomal abnormality, occuring in approximately 1 in 700 births. It occurs in all races, ethnic groups, socioeconomic classes, religions and nationalities. It also occurs evenly in both boys and girls. The Ambassadors presented, in previous issues, how DS is a worldwide medico-social problem with approximately two million persons having Trisomy-21 and the success stories of Chris Burke, the Ambassador of the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS), and his gifted friends who strive alongside their families to defeat DS.

This organization is based in New York and focusses on providing support and facilities for children with DS in that area. Various service models are available to families to meet their individual needs.
Canadian Down
Syndrome Society (CDSS)
The Canadian Down Syndrome Society provides information and assistance to all those with an interest in Down Syndrome, by advocating on behalf of individuals with Down syndrome in the areas of education, employment and healthcare and by providing networking opportunities for parents and professionals in relevant fields.
An illustrated interesting site containing stories from parents explaining what it is like to have a child with Down Syndrome and how to cope.
The DownsCity provides a forum for information impacting the DS World while "opening up" the Internet to any and all members of the Down syndrome community.

This site is a GOLDMINE of medical information about Down Syndrome. It is maintained by Dr. Len Leshin, a distinguished paediatrician. He has published a plethora of articles which are beneficial to parents and medical students.
European
Down Syndrome Association (EDSA)
The goals of this organization include spreading throughout all European nations the principle that every person with Down's syndrome has the right to receive the health care and educational services and to stimulate the implementation of a network of local groups made up of parents and professionals. There is ongoing exchange of information among the European countries on those programs that have proved to be effective.

This Spanish organization works to provide a better quality of life for persons with DS and help them to achieve social inclusion.
Provides information about DS and links to various other DS related sites on the web with a list of interesting books on DS, both in German and English languages.
JSDN--Japan Down
Syndrome Network (JDSN)
JDSN home page made by the Ibaraki Down Syndrome Association in 1995. The Japan Down Syndrome Committee was organized by parents, professionals relating to DS people in Japan to construct a better home page and databese and communication network for DS people.

National Association for Down
Syndrome (NADS)
This organization was founded in Chicago in 1961 by parents of children with Down syndrome to create a better environment and bring about understanding and acceptance of people with Down syndrome.

Down Syndrome Congress
The National Down Syndrome Congress is an American advocatory organization for Down syndrome that provides leadership in all areas of concern related to persons with Down syndrome. The NDSC is a major source of support and empowerment to persons with trisomy-21 and their families.
Penang Down Syndrome
Support Group
This Malasiyan group offers support and encouragement for parents and families of children with Down Syndrome and provides assistance to DS patients to enable them to contribute to society. This group educates the community about DS, in order to form the Penang Down Syndrome Association in the future.
This association works to support the community to develop the potential of people with Down syndrome to live a valued life.
