AMMAN, JORDAN:

Arab DoctorsWithout Frontiers

-By Dr.Mostafa Al-Salem,FRCS & Dr.Mahmoud K.Booz FRCS.,FACS.

During the Pan-Arab Orthopaedic Conference in Amman , Jordan, on Oct.23, 1998, there was a round table discussion on this topic . Dr Salem presented a paper which was very well received by the participants and the audience . Some colleagues presented their experiences in different countries where armed conflicts took place, such as Palestine, Egypt ,Syria ,Iraq, Afghanistan, Eriteria ,Iran, Sudan, Kuwait, and Tunis . Their participation made it clear that an independent body should be ready for rescue at a very short notice. Everybody knows that the Red Cross and Red Crescent movements in the Arab world are strong , able , experienced and have reasonable financial support . But alas, it is controled by the governments , hence there is always undue delay . Sometimes the neighbouring Arab Red Crescent societies are absent because of political sensitivities or even conflicts

.

The main speakers were :

Dr. Hasan Kharis, general secretary , Arab Doctors Union.
Mr.Husain Mogally, president Jordanian Lawyers Syndicate.
Dr.Mohammad Al- Haddid, president Jordanian Red Crescent Society.
Dr. Mostafa Al- Salem, councellor Panarab Orthopaedic Association.

Steps were taken to apply for an official permit licence for headquarters inAmman, Jordan.

On March 29, 1999, Dr. Gaber Ramadan passed away in peace. He was one of the great Egyptian paediatricians and medical administrators who helped in the modernization of medical services in Kuwait. The Ambassadors staff send their condolences to his wife, Mrs. Ikram, his son Mr. Hisham, his daughter Dr.Dina, and to all his colleagues, friends, students and patients in Egypt and Kuwait. One of his American friends, engineer Manu Ashoo sent the following:

"I am deeply saddened by the death of Dr Jaber Ramadan. Please convey our condolences to his family. May God be with them and comfort them. Yes it is God's will, but it is always painful to lose a friend or a family member. We do hope that he did not suffer lately . We know that he is now in the hands of the Lord, where there is eternal peace."

Dr.Gaber Ramadan was one of the organizers of the DCH (Diploma of Child Health) held in Kuwait by the Univeristy College of Dublin (UCD) for more than 15 years. In the photograph(left to right), Dr. Gaber is with the Vice-president of UCD and the international paediatrician, Prof. John Forfar.
