Youth suggest UN restructuring,
propose greater involvement

In the past few years, youth have begun to play an instrumental role in every aspect of the United Nations system. Worldwide campaigns to create awareness of UN operations among youth groups, notablythe Model United Nations activities have created much awareness about the potential role of youth in the UN's operations.

However, many youth from around the world are asking for a more integral role in the UN system. For this reason, the United Nations Youth Assembly (UNYA) Project, a youth-initiated and youth-led effort to establish a permanent body of youth within the United Nations System, has put a call out to young people everywhere. This invitation is hoped to motivate young people to be more involved in the substantive operations of the UN.

To initiate this movement, an international United Youth Conference is scheduled for July 18-25, 1999 at San Francisco State University which will host Youth Ambassadors from every country possible. The intention of the conference is bring together youth from around the globe to design the structure of a Youth Assembly.  The concept of this Assembly, once complete, will then be presented to the United Nations for adoption and implementation.  Those interested in applying are encouraged and invited to check out the following web site (http://www.oneday.org), where applications may be completed and submitted on-line.
