The Texas medical doctor, Wayman R. Spence selected sixty of the best American artists of different interests and specializations to present some of their work that related to modern medicine. This book builds on the growing interest in artistic expression within the biological sciences and medicine. One will marvel at the beauty and profound expressiveness of the works collected by Spence. He also provides a complimenting explanatory description of each of the artworks and the bios of each artist.

Below, we have selected five of the art pieces presented in the book, in hope that they can encourage readers to appreciate the miracle of life and health presented in its pages. We feel that Spence collection is a worthy addition to any home library. These specific pieces of art were selected to represent five important issues in modern medicine: pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood dreams, aging, and special needs.

Cathy Shaw is a Texas-based artist. Her work can be seen in galleries, churches, homes and commercial buildings.

Boy or Girl? is a stained-glass window. It is an original design inspired by a heat photo of a pregnant woman and conveys the joy and miracle of life. Use of color and texture harness nature's natural light.

The book's author comments on this artwork saying, "Shaw utilized the foil technique, which created fine, clean and lead lines and allowed for the creation of interesting detail."

Nursing
-- Oil on Linen (40"x30")
The works of the New York artist, Alex Grey, are now present in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art. His artwork incorporates the subtle energies of the human spirit by creating images that communicate "soul to soul". His paintings move the mind from detailed rendering of body systems to spiritual/energy systems that define its living force.

Nursing shows the bonding of mother and child as a miraculous outpouring of unobstructed love channeled through the mortal coil.

Dr. Spence expressed that "Between mother and child, there are bio-electromagnetic bonds, emotional and psychic bonds, and ultimately the spiritual bond that brought them together."

Shadieh Mirmobiny is an Iranian-American artist. She had numerous exhibitions in Californian galleries.

In Mommy's Footsteps pays tribute to the growing number of woman physicians by representing a girl dressed in a doctor's uniform.

"Expressive eyes are the hallmark of Iranian-born Mirmobiny's portraiture work, plus the Persian rug. Her (the girl) look and gesture show that she loves and worships her mother who is a doctor," explains Dr. Spence's.

Wrinkled -- Acrylic on canvas (57"x80")
The famous artist from New York, Judy Somerville, has had over 50 international exhibitions some of them were held in France, Germany and Japan.

Wrinkled is a painting is the story of an old woman and a toad. When the artist asked the old woman if she could take her picture, the woman replied, "Is there any beauty left in me?"

The author believes that the answer would be "Yes" and adds "this painting shows that beauty is not about looking young or about looking old, but it is about looking happy or perhaps about wisdom and dignity."

Richard Lang is an art teacher in Northern California. He is known for his collages which have been exhibited nationally.

Tasting Life was drawn when the Lang saw a group of blind children from the ocean-side city of San Francisco who had never experienced snow before. Their senses of taste, touch, and smell gave them a new taste on life.

Dr. Spence notes "To taste life in all its grandness, no matter what our disabilities, is the essence of this painting. The elements in this collage almost feel theatrical with the artist's improvisational use of his characters and environment."
