This year has been eventful for all and we especially remember anyone affected by the events of 11 September. We had a family encounter with terrorism just before last Christmas; Sandy's first cousin once-removed, Henry Elsworth, was a farmer in Zimbabwe who had always been liberal in outlook and generous to all, was violently murdered by "veterans" when returning home from a hospital visit in Harare; his younger son was badly injured but fortunately survived. We were so saddened by this, that we can now empathize a little with the families who were devastated by the catastrophe of 11 September; not just those bereaved by that terrorist action, but those living with violence in the Middle East and above all the long-suffering people of Afghanistan.

I greatly enjoyed your article on the community genetics course in Egypt, and I am impressed by the efforts of the Ministry of health in this field. The wealth of data on the programs and the collaborating professors was very interesting and informative . I am sure that participating in this course gave you more insight on how much the health professionals know and what they need to know in relation to community genetic services. It is an excellent article.

We liked the initiative and the national profile seems very informative. I read through it completely and thought it demonstrated content accuracy and good writing values. I will write about the profile and make a link to it in our newspaper and our website as well.

The Genetics debate over Eugenics In December 2001, a spam email was sent to MEGA (Middle Eastern Geneticist Association) members raising the issue of eugenics. Elected president of MEGA, Dr. Chahira Kozma, an associate professor of pediatrics at Georgetown University distributed this letter to MEGA members and all geneticists regarding the issue of eugenics and racism.

"As I read the message about eugenics that was recently sent to the MEGA email list, I was struck by several different emotions. Primarily I was shocked and angered that anyone would use this list that should be intended for legitimate education and communication between members to send such a baseless account of eugenics in society. This list should not be used to send any types of anti-Jewish or any type of hateful (in the form of racial, ethnic, or religious) discourse. This list is maintained by professionals and we, as an organization, should stick to our goals of promoting education and research in the field of genetics in the Middle East and avoid at all costs the disseminating of racist and inflammatory propaganda."

The Ambassadors Magazine as a forum for all cultures and civilizations is against any form of discrimination or racism.

We have all seen The Ambassadors Magazine and think its great, especially the coverage of the Community Genetics courses held in Cairo, May 2001.
